During the Pleistocene, armadillos existed in North America, throughout the southeast and midwest. DNA analysis confirmed the nine-banded armadillo was one of the species.

While the beautiful armadillo became extinct, the nine-banded disappeared from its range in North America until about 150 years ago. It has now reclaimed much of its original territory.

Armadillos are generally insectivorous, but have been known to eat bird eggs, predate on reptiles and amphibians, and take advantage of carrion.

Some consider them a nuisance animal because they dig and root and burrow, but they are actually beneficial. Check out an article from the Revelator about the advantages of armadillos, HERE.
